“What Do You Want to Know?” (njgrace.org Sermon)
This powerful grace-centered message contrasts the explosion of worldly knowledge (which doubles every ~13 months and leaves people empty, underemployed, and chasing the wrong things) with the infinite, fixed, eternal value of knowing Christ Jesus and Him crucified.
Human knowledge is finite-mind vs. infinite-information → total frustration.
The only pursuit that is never wasted, never outdated, and infinitely rewarding is revelation knowledge of Christ.
Pastor essentially asks: In light of eternity, what do YOU want to know?
Core Message in Bullet Points
- The Problem of Worldly (Sense) Knowledge
- Knowledge doubling curve: 1900 → every 100 years; now → every 13 months; soon → every 12 hours.
- 52% of college graduates work outside their degree → underemployed, discouraged, wasted time and money.
- Even Bible/seminary degrees can become mere “sense knowledge” with no spiritual life if not pursued through revelation.
- Paul (pre-conversion): mastered the law → counted it all dung/garbage compared to knowing Christ (Phil 3:8-9).
→ Everything is worthless next to the infinite value of knowing Christ.
- The One Thing Worth Knowing
- Paul’s post-conversion determination:
“I determined to know NOTHING among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.” (1 Cor 2:2) - This is the minimum and the maximum every Christian should pursue.
- Knowing Christ is infinite — it never runs out, never becomes irrelevant, and revelation about Him can multiply faster than any human knowledge.
- Paul’s post-conversion determination:
- Natural Man vs. Spiritual Man
Natural/Soulish Man Spiritual Man Lives by 5 senses & human wisdom Lives by revelation from the Spirit Things of God = foolishness Appraises/discerns all things Cannot receive spiritual truths Has the mind of Christ (1 Cor 2:16) Pursues worldly knowledge & success Pursues knowing Christ above all Ends up empty & frustrated Experiences infinite value & freedom - Three Spiritual Steps (1 Corinthians 2:9–16)Step 1 – Spiritually Unknown (v. 9)
Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, heart has not imagined → all God has prepared for those who love Him.
→ These things are hidden from natural senses; only God knows them.Step 2 – Making Spiritually Known (v. 10–13)
God → reveals them to us THROUGH THE SPIRIT.
The Holy Spirit searches the deep things of God and shows them to our spirit (Spirit-to-spirit).
We receive → not the spirit of the world, but → the Spirit who is from God, so we may know the things freely given to us.
We then speak → spiritual thoughts with spiritual words (revelation teaching/preaching).Step 3 – Spiritual Discernment (v. 14–16)
Natural man → rejects spiritual things as foolishness.
Spiritual man → appraises (judges/discerns) all things; no one can judge him.
→ “We have the mind of Christ.”
Result: clear leading, godly decisions, ability to sense spiritual atmospheres, recognize spiritual people, etc.
Practical Illustrations Given
- Blind man who receives sight but keeps using his cane out of habit → must learn to trust his new eyes.
→ We must stop defaulting to natural thinking and learn to live by spiritual revelation. - Personal story of spiritually discerning two assisted-living facilities → one felt demonic, one felt godly → Holy Spirit gave clear direction.
The Bottom-Line Question for Every Believer
What do YOU want to know?
- Still chasing degrees, success, information, religious knowledge, or self-effort (natural man)?
- Or have you shifted everything to “I am determined to know nothing except Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (spiritual man)?
→ The message ends with a call to become Spiritually discerning men and women who live from revelation, walk in the mind of Christ, and experience the infinite treasure that never depreciates: knowing Him.
This is pure, undiluted grace teaching: stop trying to know everything — just know Him.
Everything else is garbage.
He is the one thing that is infinitely knowable and infinitely valuable.
Pursue Him.
He reveals Himself to those who love and wait on Him. 🔥
